SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On February 27, 2022, the St. Johnsbury Police Department received a complaint from a woman at the Dunkin Donuts on Railroad Street that she had been scammed out of money by a person she had communicated with over CraigsList. She reported paying money to this person after responding to an advertisement regarding the sale of kittens. The seller was reportedly located in Vermont. The victim reported being told by the alleged scammer to meet her at the Dunkin Donuts to receive the kitten she paid for but neither the cat nor the other party showed. An investigation revealed the victim’s money had actually been sent to a female in Central Falls, Rhode Island. An arrest warrant regarding the above violations will be requested from the Honorable Court.

The St. Johnsbury Police Department would like to remind residents to not send money to unknown parties over the internet before receiving goods or services. If a physical meet-up is required to obtain the merchandise, the money can always be exchanged at the time of sale, rather than sent in advance.
