On November 4, 2022, Chadd Knowles approached a St. Johnsbury Police Department patrol officer and made false statements orally and in writing about an animal complaint. During the investigation, Shari Jo Perkins also made false oral statements to police about the situation. Both were cited into Caledonia Superior Court with an arraignment date of January 23, 2023 at 0830 hours.
