Earlier that evening St. Johnsbury Police Department patrol officers had responded to a report of a threat made electronically by Mr. Bathalon to the same victim. Bathalon was located and arrested. A set of brass knuckles was seized. Bathalon was later released on a citation into Caledonia Superior Court to answer the violation on November 8, 2021 at 0830 hours.

On 08/20/2021, St. Johnsbury Police responded to assist the St. Johnsbury Fire Department for a possible arson on Portland Street. After arrival, 4 other fires were set from Portland Street to the Star Theater. The suspect was described as a short white male with no shirt, brandishing a large knife, and carrying a can. A short time later Corporal Steven Hartwell and Officer Davis Guyer located a male matching the description walking on Eastern Avenue. James McChesney was taken into custody and lodged at NERCF for lack of the bail imposed. When McChesney was arrested a can of commercial adhesive (marked flammable), a lighter and a hunting knife were taken off his person. The adhesive matched the substance located at the scenes of the fire. Fires were set on 3 buildings, including the St. Johnsbury Welcome Center. Tires of two vehicles were also set on fire. No significant damage was caused by the fires and this incident remains under investigation.

Shwab was screened for impairment and also suspected to be under the influence of narcotics while operating the vehicle. Shwab resisted arrest when being taken into custody. A Drug Recognition Expert exam was performed with the assistance of Vermont State Police and an evidentiary blood draw obtained. The vehicle was seized pending the application for a search warrant. SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On July 4th, the St. Johnsbury Police Department received a complaint of a man seen on the security cameras shoplifting from the White’s Market on July 2nd. An investigation revealed that Christian Haines (27) did steal $7.68 worth of cheese on that date. On August 2nd, 2021, Haines was located and cited for the above violations. Haines will appear in Caledonia Superior Court on October 18, 2021 at 0830 hours.
